🚨 BREAKING UPDATE: Solar Panels to Become Standard on Most New Homes in England

The UK Government has officially published the Future Homes and Buildings Standards 2026.

The new regulations introduce requirements for renewable electricity generation and low-carbon heating in new homes in England.

This is no longer simply a proposal from MPs. The regulations have been made, with implementation scheduled for March 2027.

What has the government announced?

Major Changes to Building Regulations Create New Opportunities for the Electrical Industry

The UK Government has confirmed significant changes to building regulations through the publication of the Future Homes and Buildings Standards in March 2026.

Under the new regulations, most newly constructed homes in England are expected to incorporate solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, alongside low-carbon heating technologies and improved energy efficiency measures.

The changes are scheduled to take effect from 24 March 2027, subject to transitional arrangements.

Growing Opportunities for Electricians

The introduction of these standards is expected to support demand for professionals with skills in renewable energy and modern electrical installations.

Key areas include solar PV installation, electrical distribution systems, energy management technologies and the electrical infrastructure associated with low-carbon heating.

Preparing for the Future

At College of London (COL), we recognise the importance of supporting electricians as the industry evolves.

Through our electrical training programmes, recognised qualifications and occupational competence assessments, we help learners develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required for professional development.

As renewable energy technologies become increasingly common, electricians who invest in additional training and qualifications may be better positioned to take advantage of emerging career opportunities.
